The Kazakhstan Almaty School for the Blind and Towards Humanity In 1996 Wissam Boustany toured in Kazakhstan and Kyrghystan. During the visit Wissam had the opportunity of giving a workshop at the Almaty School for the Blind, which left a great impression on everyone involved. On the last day of the tour Wissam was invited to dinner with the British Ambassador H.E. Douglas McAdam and told him about his dream to raise enough funds to buy a special braille computer and software for the school. This proved to be the beginning of a very fruitful collaboration between Towards Humanity, The British and Lebanese Embassies, the British Council and the Sight Foundation (a charity based in Amsterdam and Moscow, specialising in the supply of braille software/hardware products for the blind in Russian speaking countries). Two years later a brand new computer, braille software and embosser were shipped to the school, costing approximately $12,000. The aid package also included training on the equipment, given by a specialist from Moscow. This project will now serve as a template for further technology distribution among schools for the blind in Russian speaking countries, with the help of the Sight Foundation.
